Nutrient-Dense Chemo Smoothie Recipe

Are you struggling to eat well during chemotherapy? Then this recipe is just what you need!

Navigating the various challenges of cancer treatment is hard! Maintaining proper nutrition is crucial during this time, and your body will cope better with the demands of treatment if it has access to more nutrient dense foods. This high-protein, nutrient-packed smoothie is not only super tasty but also designed to give you something simple and nourishing to lean on when you need it. In this post, I’ll walk you through the recipe and highlight why it's a go-to for anyone undergoing cancer treatment.

The Importance of Nutrition in Cancer Treatment:

Cancer treatment can be physically taxing, often leading to a loss of appetite and difficulty in consuming solid foods. This is where liquid nourishment, like soups and smoothies, come to the rescue. A well-balanced diet, with the help of a cancer dietitian, is essential to support your body's needs during this challenging period. I dive into the ingredients, one by one, below. And if you’re short on time, just scroll down to find the recipe!

The Role of Protein:

Protein is a vital component in any cancer patient's diet. It plays a crucial role in repairing damaged cells, supporting the immune system, and maintaining muscle mass. This smoothie recipe incorporates a scoop of protein powder, making it an excellent source of high-quality protein, which is especially important for individuals undergoing cancer treatment. I’m often asked which protein powders are the best. It really depends on your dietary needs and your taste buds. Taste a few and see which you prefer, but don’t go spending thousands of dollars on them. The cheaper ones can be just as good! I’m always here if you have any questions about choosing the right protein powder for you.

Antioxidant-Rich Berries:

The frozen mixed berries in this smoothie bring not only a burst of vibrant colour and flavour, but also a good dose of cancer-fighting antioxidants. Antioxidants help combat free radicals in the body, which can contribute to the development of cancer. Including antioxidant rich foods in your diet is a proactive step towards reducing the risk of cancer recurrence and supporting your overall health.

Soluble Fibre:

This smoothie doesn't just stop at protein and antioxidants. It also includes chia seeds, known for their high soluble fibre content. Soluble fibre is gentle on the gut, is essential for maintaining digestive health and can help manage side effects like constipation, often associated with cancer treatments. Additionally, chia seeds are packed with essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and provide a satisfying texture to your smoothie.

Healthy Fats & Protein from Peanut Butter:

A heaped tablespoon of peanut butter not only adds creaminess and flavour to your smoothie but also provides healthy fats and protein. These fats are important for overall health and can be particularly beneficial for cancer patients as they assist in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D and E.

Dairy or Plant-Based Milk:

Whether you choose soy or cow's milk, both options contain protein and offer essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. These nutrients can help maintain bone health, which is a common concern for breast cancer patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy and/or hormone therapy. Make sure your plant-based milk is calcium fortified (you can always ask me over at @breastcancer.dietitian.alex if you’re unsure!).

Incorporating this high-protein, nutrient-dense cancer treatment smoothie into your daily routine can be a delicious and practical way to support your health during oncology treatment. Remember to consult with an oncology dietitian to tailor your nutrition to your specific dietary needs. So, blend up this delightful smoothie, savour it while sitting in the sunshine, and take one more step towards nourishing your body 🍓🫐🥜🌞
